This article presents a comprehensive study of the scholar and
creative activities of Maulana Fakhrud-din Ali Safi Kashifi Hiravi (d.
939/1532), who lived and worked in Herat during the fifteenth and
sixteenth centuries. A talented man of letters, tazkira writer, manāqib
author and a renowned preacher of his time, this scholar’s activity is
analyzed in close connection with the scholarly and literary endeavors, as
well as the mentorship roles, of his contemporaries and patrons, including
Maulana Abdurakhman Jami, Alisher Navo’i, Khwandamir and others. This
approach also contributes to forming a clear understanding of scholarly
and literary milieu of Herat in that period.
The author places particular emphasis on a unique aspect of Ali
Safi Hiravi’s talent that has not previously been the subject of specialized
scholarly research – his activity as a calligrapher – and on the tangible
outcome of his efforts in this field, namely the manuscript copy of Sharh-i
Fusus al-Hikam. Based on newly discovered data, the article elucidates
Ali Safi’s work as a literate and distinguished scribe.
